WrestleMania 39 was a historic two-night spectacle that featured some of the best matches and moments in WWE history. One of the highlights of the event was the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, which closed the show on Night 2.

The match was a culmination of a long and personal rivalry between the two superstars, who had both overcome various obstacles and challenges to reach the top of the industry. Reigns, who had been the dominant champion for over two years, faced his toughest test yet against Rhodes, who had returned to WWE after leaving AEW and had won the 2023 Royal Rumble match.

The match was a brutal and intense affair that lasted over 40 minutes and saw both men give everything they had. Reigns had to deal with the interference of his cousins, The Usos, who had lost their Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship to Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens on Night 1. Rhodes had to overcome his injured shoulder, which he had suffered at Elimination Chamber, and the betrayal of his brother Dustin Rhodes, who turned on him during the match.

The match ended with Reigns hitting Rhodes with a devastating spear and pinning him for three counts, retaining his title and ending Rhodes’ dream of becoming the Universal Champion. The crowd at SoFi Stadium gave both men a standing ovation for their incredible performance, which many critics and fans hailed as one of the best matches in WrestleMania history.

One of the most prominent personalities who praised the match was WWE legend “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who spoke highly of both Reigns and Rhodes in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated. Austin, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, said that he loved the match and would not have changed anything about it. He also said that Reigns should not lose the title anytime soon, as he is doing very well as the champion.

“I have a five-star rating, okay?” Austin said. “I’m going with everything. For me, they did very well. I was wondering how they were going to do this fight. They did it perfectly. I told my wife: ‘I think they are going to last 30 (minutes)’. They ended up lasting a little longer 34, and it was a classic. I loved it and wouldn’t have changed a thing. I texted a couple of people who had been in it: Awesome.”

“I loved the ending,” Austin continued. “I loved everything. Roman is very good right now. The story was there: Cody coming back from injury, coming back into the fold after he left AEW, and putting himself in the position he’s in now, overcoming all this adversity as a part of one of the most famous wrestling families ever in the business, and trying to finish the story against Roman.”

“I watched both nights of WrestleMania 39 very closely. In my opinion, you can’t take the title from Roman right now. You want to give it to Cody somehow, some way, sometime… but now is not the time.”

Both men proved why they are two of the best wrestlers in the world today, and delivered a match that lived up to the hype and expectations.
